Task 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Since our preliminary task I feel I have learnt great amounts. I have learnt more when it comes to planning for our media product to include our own clear sophisticated storyboards. Within our planning we had to think about details that we didn't for our preliminary, such as SFX's, Avtion and Lighting. Because our media product had to be our own original ideas and it had to be differant and unique, it took a much longer time than our preliminary. We also had to make everything clear and make sure that it followed a journey because we did not have dialogue, it was only visual. This meant the narrative and storyline had to be very clear. Our post production also took a much longer time than our post production for our preliminary. Shooting also took a lot longer because our preliminary had only very basic shots This was becuase our preliminary had basic shots where as our thriller product consisted of tracking shots around a table. extreme close-ups, panning shots, depth of field shots (with parts in focus and other parts not) and birdseyes view shots using a crane.

We also had to take more time to think about positioning of filming compared to the preliminary, checking that we were always in focus, that we hadn't crossed the 180 degree rule, not to jog the camera while filming, showing that we had developed more care into how we filmed.

Due to a faulty sound cable when filming our final thriller product we had to use 'Soundtrack pro' because the sound we recorded was un usable. We added in sound effects of doors opening and closing, guns shots, foot steps, sounds of drinks and ambient sounds of rooms (to create more of an atmosphere and it gave sense of tension). We did none of this for our preliminary. In our preliminary we had no ambient tension which made it bland and dead.

Once we had finished editing the shots in our thriller sequence, to make it more sophisticated and proffesional we used 'Final Cut' and 'After Effects'. In 'Fianl Cut' we added in titles and transitions. In 'After Effects' we added in a 'Muzzle Flash' from the gun and a 'blood splat' over the top of our ACE title. This gave the finishing touch that made it a bit more unique.

Task 6

What have you learnt about technologies from process of constructing this product?

Task 5

How did you attract/ address your audience?

Task 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our media product 'ACE' we classed under the genre of a gangster thriller. Therfore it would contain, action and violence, drug references and possible sexual refferences, because of this we gave it a 15 certificate. Our opening sequence consists of a murder, therfore we definately thought it should be a 15. Our target audience ranges from 15+ and we thought that it would be for a male audience because of the masculine content and male interests. However we also thought that it would appeal to some women as it has the reverse to traditional gangster films where the woman is superior to the men.

Task 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

We chose ‘Lionsgate’ as our distributor because a lot of their films they have distributed have themes of violence and action and high stakes. Therefore our media product would be an ideal film to distribute with a different edge to their other movies, with it being about poker. A lot of their films are very masculine (films include 'The Gamer' and 'The Bank Job'), which is ideal for ours which targets the male audience.
‘Lionsgate’ are a well known established distributor therefore the film has a higher chance of great success in release and budget, making it profitable.

Our thriller would be classes as a 'medium budget thriller' which is similar to popular films they have distributed such as saw 1. 'Lionsgate' would find this appealing because less money would be spent on making the film and more spent on marketing and advertising the film, bringing more success and profit.

Task 2

How does your product represent particular social groups?

For our media product we wanted to create an international atmosphere. We cast our poker players from many different nationalities. We had nationalities ranging from Ukrainian, Nigerian, Russian, Korean and German. We wanted this atmosphere because of the stereotypical take the American media takes categorized ethnic gangsters. Because of this we are subverting to the society’s views on the look of people. In our final cut piece we did not use any dialogue, therefore the pinpointing of these nationalities was less than we wanted.

The look we wanted to our poker players is similar to the likes of Casino Royale where they also have a wide range of eastern European, African and oriental.

We did not single our any nationality as our main focus of attention was on the lead role and the significance of it being a woman. In most American media the ethnic gangster characters are seen as the ‘bad’ guy. Due to the media influence the Arabian as the terrorist figure.

This is a shot from the film Casino Royale in the big poker scene, where we can see a range of naitonalities. Which is similar to ours....

Task 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

These four screengrabs are of the titles from our media sequence. These follow the conventions of real media product because we open the sequence with titles showing the distributing and production company. Then at the end of the sequence we have the title and then the director.
We kept our titles on a plain black background and not over the top of our sequence shots, the reason for this being that we thought that when placed over the top of shots it took away the tension build up and distracted the viewer from the tension of the shots.

However we challenged conventions of real media, as our leading role was a women. It is especially challenging as our sequence is of a poker game which is traditionally portrayed in real media as the “man’s game”. The two shots below are screengrabs that show this.

We also conformed to real conventions of media when we had shots of the table, the chips and the hands of cards. This conforms to real media because we see it in films such as Casino Royale where they have lots of these shots to build up the tention of the stakes, which is what we intended when filming these shots.

This is screengrab from the film Casino Royale where we can see a great amount of chips showing the stakes are high. We tried to do this when putting a shot of the aston martin keys on top of the chips.

Post Production

Editing sound:

When listening back to the sound we had recorded on shooting day we could only hear fuzz and loud buzzing, we later establised it was due to a faulty cable. Therefore we had to re-think what we were going to do for sound. We decided not to use any dialogue, just have sound effects. We placed in sound effects of doors, poker chips, clearing of throats and glasses. We felt this worked well, because the dialogue would have distracted from the storyline and ruined the build of tension, whereas the sound effects added huge tension. We still felt that after these sound effects it needed something else, this is when we added in underlying 'room tone'. This added more of an atmosphere and enhanced the tension. It also made it more realistic as every room has an underlying 'room tone', if we didn't have it, it would seem very dead. We used soundtrack pro to choose these sounds, all we had to do is import the sound from soundtrack pro and into final cut pro timeline. We also had to render the sound, which converts it and makes it useable on the final cut pro.

Editing shots:

We decided that to make sure the storyline very clear we would have to edit in an very accurate way. To increase tension aswell we sharply cut the shots of the poker players faces, eyes and hands to the poker game and the chips. We then had shots of the hit man walking down the corridor in intervals between the shots. To build importance and tension to who the guy is walking down the corridor, we made the shots of him speed up and then put all the poker shots slightly in slow motion and some in big slow motion, this contrasted it and made the question who is that man? more important. The contrast was enhanced even more because of the colour differance between the shots of the poker scene and the shots of the hitman walking along the corridor, which adds more suspence because of the confusion to where he is. The way we have edited it we think builds up the tension and suspence to the climax at the end.
