There is some useful material here and you have chosen well in focussing on these real bands in order to illuminate the choices you are going to make in the marketing of your own act. It would be useful to have some video, as well as image, references, to help build your ideas for the music promo element.

Research into real artists of a similar type

MGMT: Same kind of edgy look that isn't considered 'clean'. This kind of thing we would want our band to look like.

Other bands that have similar music are:

Daft Punk: This group is often compared to Does it offend you, yeah? who wrote the song we have chosen. However the look they have gone for the neon lights is similar to an element we wish to use in our video for our track.

Justice:

A french electronic music duo that have the same music genre and have an image that would be particularly great for our band. It is has a quirky grunge feel that works with our choice of song.

Proposal for a new popular music artist

Genre: Electronic rock

Type of act: Edgy performers

Star Image: Unique style, rough around the edges. 5 all male members of the band. Atrractive in their unique style. Drums, bass, guitar, keyboard, lead singer.


Target Audience: 17-25 year olds, male and female, students.


Choice of Track: We are Rockstars by Does it offend you, yeah?

Initial ideas/treatment

1.

Track: Neon

Artist: John Mayer

Star image: A cool young attractive male singer who plays the guitar. He writes his own music usually about love and women. He is good looking making his managers sell him as a fanciable "dream" man to young girls. What makes him differant is that he isn't the stereotypical boy band crush; he is masculine because he doesn't go for a "clean" image. It is more alternative and quirky.

Treatment: Placed in Gatwick airport, linking to the neon lights idea within the song's lyrics because of the buzzy bright atmosphere in airports. Chose Gatwick over Heathrow because Gatwick is smaller. The lyrics "she's slipping through my hands, she's burning just like neon, she comes and she goes. who knows how long she can go before she burns away." I thought this could link to a good narrative where a girl is getting on a plane, leaving a guy behind, who goes after her. Quite stereotypical however to make it a twist he suddenly realises love her and stops chasing.

For the performance side, John Mayer would be playing the guitar in the middle of the airport with everyone around him not even noticing him. He carries on playing till everyone in that terminal leaves and the lights get turned off. "before she burns away"

Cut away shots of neon lights flickering. Shots of differant people in a variety of situations in the airport signifying life goes on after relationships, you have more.

Track: Electric Feel

Band: MGMT

Star Image: A band of men that are indie pop/electric. Their look is odd, weird and dreamy, almost fantasy. Videos and shoots of dressing up things that don't match, facepaint. Spiritual?. Use nature a lot in their image. Their videos are often like dreams. They are not heavily mainstream. Atracts an indie/eletric audience from around 15 to late 20's male and female.

Treatment: Would film it in studio.

Narrative --> A room where water falls from ceiling. Party of around 7 people wearing only underwear, wellies and holding umbrellas. They are all partying including the members of the band. Then one girl wows/shocks ("shock me like electric eel")them as she walks in wearing a bright yellow annorac and does a little dance in the middle that everyone watches and then just leaves.

Performance--> Them set up playing in two wide shots. One with glow paint and uv everywhere. The other with them and lots of water.

Shots of drummer playing with water splashing on the drumkit where they hit the drums.

Shots of glow in the dark wellies and umbrellas. Make a glow dance from them.

Slow motion shots of individual people with heavy amounts of water falling on them. Show their reactions in slow motion where you can see the water falling.

Over this course I will produce a main artefact, 2 ancilliary artefacts and an accompanying blog containing my research, planning and evaluation materials.

The involves...

- doing a a multi-media production, based in the music industry.

- working as a small independant production company where I will do the following: a promotion package for the release of an album. The package must contain a music promo video and 2 of the following
1. a website homepage for the band.
2. a cover for its release on CD.
3. a magasine advertisement for for the CD.
